Mattress Protection

For the faithful readers of The Snooze Guru, who wait eagerly each Tuesday and Thursday for the latest installment – the latest nuggets of knowledge passed on like bedding industry folklore; who populate linen store sale lines and flip through countless catalogues; who sleep soundly; who wake well rested; who are tired of descriptions, have probably noticed that I often address the importance of mattress protection.

That’s because it’s REALLY important.

But for the new readers, or perhaps the faithful ones who can’t get enough of this valuable advice, let’s explore why it’s imperative that you protect your mattress. But first, a story.

That Time When Dave Lost His Warranty

Dave was a kid who grew into an adult who hadn’t moved out of his kid sized bed. He tossed some nights, and turned on other nights. He didn’t get the sleep he needed, and it showed. Boy, did it show. One time, Dave went to work and his boss said, “Dave, you look awful! You haven’t had a wink of sleep, have you? Well, you’re fired!” And that was the end of Dave’s modeling career. Dave went home sad, dejected, and tired. He knew that it was time for a change. Dave knew he needed a new mattress.

So, he shopped around until he found the right one. After it was delivered, he had the best sleep he’d had in ages. He woke up and said, “That was the best sleep I’ve had in ages!” but since Dave lived alone, no one was there to hear his joyous exclamation. This made him a little sad, so he decided to have a party that night to celebrate his newly found gateway to great sleep.

That night, as Dave was surrounded by friends saying things like, “Dave, you look like a new man! What gives?” and “‘Atta boy, Dave-O” and “Dave, we’re all out of cheese. Is there more cheese in the fridge?” he was so overcome with joy that he didn’t even notice when he landed in his bedroom and drifted off to sleep. He awoke the next morning to a massive red stain on his new white sheets! “Oh no! I fell asleep with my glass of wine still in my hand!” he remembered, cursing himself that he was so overcome with joy that he took his glass to bed with him.

He stripped off the sheets, and sadly saw that the wine had leaked through and stained his brand new mattress. Dave was crushed, but not nearly as crushed as when he remembered what the salesperson told him when he bought his mattress. “Dave, you should get a mattress protector with this mattress. If the mattress gets stained, then you will lose your warranty! Would you like to buy one?” Dave didn’t buy a mattress protector. He said, “I see what you’re trying to do, and it’s not going to work. I’m not going to buy everything you tell me to! I’m not going to stand here and let you jack up the price on me like that. I just want the mattress! I’m an adult. I don’t wet the bed or spill things.”

Dave felt sad, dejected, and a little hungry. As he sat over his bowl of soggy leftovers, he gazed out the window, looking deep into the sad and sorry morning sky.

Don’t Be Like Dave!

When you buy a new mattress, ALWAYS PURCHASE A MATTRESS PROTECTOR! Almost all manufactures will void a warranty on a stained mattress. No matter the stain, no matter the source, if there is a spot on your mattress, then you are likely out of luck. Mattress protectors will ensure that any liquid spilled on your bed will not seep onto the outer layer of the mattress. Mattress protectors also protect your body from dust mites and other allergens that can accumulate by the millions in an unprotected mattress. Purchase a mattress protector with your new mattress, and protect your investment, your warranty, and your health.
